Tectonic evolution and subsidence history of the Cretaceous basins in southern Egypt: The Komombo Basin

Abstract The structure and tectonic evolution of the Cretaceous rift basins southern Egypt are poorly understood. In this study, tectonostratigraphy Komombo Basin has been determined using seismic, well biostratigraphic data. basin is compared to Kharit, Nuqra Beni Suef in as Muglad Sudan. a 58 km long, 28 wide NW–SE trending half‐graben infilled with 2200 m Berriasian‐Maastrichtian sediments overlain by 400 Pliocene sediments. Four Berriasian Maastrichtian syn‐rift post‐rift sequences three channel systems Nile have identified. Moreover, series normal faults, negative flower structures, reverse faults folds mapped basin. Backstripping reveals two phases during Berriasian‐Barremian Turonian‐Santonian, respectively. Additionally, subsidence curves indicate that major unconformities occurred Aptian‐Albian Maastrichtian‐Pliocene, which correlated basement uplift Albian‐Cenomanian Oligocene‐Miocene flank related opening Red Sea, episodes attributed far‐field stress changes resulting from initial South Atlantic followed NW part African plate colliding anticlockwise rotating into Europe. highest β factors (1.20–1.11) for both found at centre thinned crust 32.5 28.2 31.9 depocenter western similar history, stratigraphy structural style Mugland basins. All these witnessed Early Late Cretaceous, whereas encountered strike‐slip events Cretaceous.
